Language and Communication

March 14th, 2010

I’ve noticed over my lifetime that communication, especially with people one knows well, has become shorter and shorter. It seems rare to find people writing letters back and forth like they did as shortly as 50 years ago. A lengthy letter to someone you are courting has been replaced now by a nonsensical message of 140 characters or less, for example: “u bzy 2nt?”. I will be the first to admit that my grammar is not the best and that I take liberties with the English language, but this may be a bit too far – even when I text I try to use proper words! Perhaps it is a sign that I am growing too old and am out of touch with today? Probably.

Here’s a picture taken while I was in Vegas, just as a preview of posts to come as I get things scanned in.

Impact Wrench AND Ratchet!

November 11th, 2007

I purchased this item today, along with a couple other modifications, I’m ready to use the air system for real on the truck. I did discover, however, that 5 gallons is not enough air to run an impact wrench long enough for 4 wheels, I shall need to add more air.

Thursday Evening

Quick! Get home! Change! Got the tickets? Ready to go! Got to get to Scottsdale for the show on time!

Had a great time, though did have to hurry to make it there.

Finally got it installed

October 14th, 2007

I finally got the 5 gallon air tank installed on the truck. Here are some pictures of it on the truck now.

I put in that last one so you can see it’s not all that visible unless you’re under the truck, you can just barely see the handle.

Click on a pic for a big copy.

Verio Extorts Money, Little Guy Gains Nothing

August 10th, 2007

A long long time ago (prior to 2000) my brother and I had registered for hosting and domain support via Verio, at the time there weren’t many options and they seemed best. A few of the domains I have are still registered through them, therefore DNS control is done via Verio.

Apparantly in 2002 when we sent in the cancellation email for hosting (though we wanted to continue DNS with them at the time) Verio disregarded did not receive the email, and therefore never stopped the hosting account. They continued hosting it for approximately 30 days then canceled it due to non payment.

After this they put a hold on the account, but somehow continued to bill us for the domains we had registered. This hold made it so that we could not make any DNS changes, nor move these domains until we paid them full price for the 2 years of hosting that we canceled and that they provided for only 30 days.

This seems to be extortion to me, if I want control of my domain, I need to pay for a service that I never received, nor will I ever receive… Believe me, if anyone asks me about what host to use, Verio will not be my recommendation.

Jiffy Lube

July 10th, 2007

One day I’m feeling lazy so I decide, “Hey, instead of changing my own oil in 100 degree heat, why don’t I take it in for service, it’ll cost me money, but save me frustration.” I took both the Neon and the Frontier in that day to Jiffy Lube.

As I watched them work on my two vehicles the first thing I noticed was that they could not remove the casing for the air filter on the Neon. Normally while at one of these places they come to you and report the status at some point, along the lines of “yeah you need a new air filter”, even when you just put in a new one, however the tech I had stated while looking me direct in the eyes, “The air filter on your Neon is fine, it will last a while yet”… now how he could gather this information without removing the casing, I would love to know.
A few thousand miles later my AC belt on the Frontier, which is completely unrelated to Jiffy Lube, is loose so I get under the truck to tighten it up. While under the vehicle I notice mass amounts of oil dripping from the shield, my mind is thinking “crap, I have an oil leak, just what I don’t need”.

It turns out that the oil was from the oil filter Jiffy Lube had replaced, they had not tightened it on so I was slowly losing oil, had I not noticed it I’m certain my engine would have seized. After a stop at Autozone, with Ben and Ryan, we replaced the filter, and tossed in some new oil. I think my truck is much happier now.

I, however, am not at all happy with Jiffy Lube, and plan to never return there again.

Updates

March 18th, 2007

Well, I’ve had next to no time to work on the afore mentioned projects. I have however received audio from Adam for the next episode. Am very happy about that, however need space to film now and have none of that.

Been working alot, including Saturday this past week. Oddly enough also ran into my boss in the afternoon while not at work. The odds of that are apparantly the same as the rear right tire on both vehicles going flat on the same day — that’s right it happened! One while driving the other when I got home from having it replaced! Hah!

Later.

Lego MINDSTORMS NXT

January 30th, 2007

I have now purchased one of the above mentioned kits, am attempting to learn how to program. It is very interesting so far, I now have many ideas in my head, now if only I can make them happen…

Computer…

January 30th, 2007

I have begun to traverse the utter depths of geekdom. I have begun to construct a (desktop) computer case from Lego. Yes, Lego. The power LED, the HD LED, the casing, the motherboard mounts… all Lego. Obviously I can’t make the motherboard hard disk, and various peripherals out of Lego, however they will all be mounted BY Lego.

My plan is to not modify any standard Lego pieces. I will have to make minor modifications to some electric Lego wires, but I attempt not to cut, drill, or melt any plastic pieces.

We’ll see how it goes eh?
